The University of Punjab, founded more than 140 years ago, has been an institution of academic excellence not only in the Indian subcontinent but also among the great Universities of fame in the World.
It's graduates, and the students of it's affiliated colleges, have marked positions for themselves in the diversified fields of brilliance, including Medicine, Engineering, Liberal Arts and it has been recognized by the International community since long.
It was in the year 1972 that it started it's first Business School which was second, after IBA Karachi in the whole of Pakistan.
Business Administration has a bearing on the growth of Corporate Business Culture in the economies of all countries. Pakistan was carved out of India as a brand new Nation in 1947 on the basis of economic deprivation of the Muslims in the region, and suffered from Educational inadequacies on this account.
It was after the first two decades of its independence that Pakistani business started to emerge. Therefore the Government and the business community decided to train business executives in Pakistan. As a result, The Institute of Business Administration Karachi was established at The Karachi University. It was the only school offering Business Administration in Pakistan and was also called, The IBA Karachi. Many young students from Northern Pakistan also studied at the IBA Karachi who later earned big name in Pakistan as well as in the International Finance worldwide.
Mr. Showkat Aziz, the former Prime Minister of Pakistan and a Citibank Banker, is a product of IBA Karachi.
It was in 1972 that planners in Pakistan decided to run the second a Business School in Punjab. The Business School was first started at the Administrative Sciences department of Punjab University and was headed by Dr. Muhammad Afzal, PhD from Cornell. The faculty included many scholars like Dr. Mujeeb A Sheikh, Dr. Jaffery, Dr. Munir, Dr. Showkat, Mr. Muzaffar Qureshi, Mr. Zafar Iqbal Qureshi (later known as ZIC at LUMS) and Dr. Idrees besides other mentionable names.
The second Business School of Pakistan was given an independent status in 1973 and was shifted to a new premise of an ancient old red bricks building to be headed by Dr. Khawja Amjad Saeed, another scholar of eminence. Dr. Khawaja Amjad Saeed was brought here from the Hailey College of Commerce, Lahore.
From it's red bricks building The IBA Punjab, has traveled to its present new premises, in the lateral years which has been a commendable journey. Since then the graduates of the first batches of The IBA Punjab worked hard to create a name for themselves and also for their institute. We are proud to mention the name of another Showkat, Mr.Shoukat Tareen, here, who has brought laurels to the IBA Punjab through his outstanding work in the banking sector.
We may also mention the names of Mian Amir Mahmud, the politician, whose cause of fame, more than politics is, his Education Empire which he started with a modest beginning.
The name of Ramiz Raja, the cricket legend is a source of pride for us all as is his illustrious wife, also an IBA Punjab graduate, a distinction which perhaps no other sportsman in Pakistan shares with Rajaas family.
Regardless of what has been done so far, a lot has to be done in the years to come. We must all know that the objective of State run IBA Punjab and IBA Karachi is not just income generation. The prime objective of these institutions is to contribute to the society by providing low priced business studies to the common man. It is the common man who strives hard to become a big man.
The institute has discharged this responsibility successfully in all those years. It has also added an Executive MBA Program, as well, which is self financed and is run to make profit. Still a lot needs to be done to improve the faculty at the IBA to add greater value to its curriculum, to raise its standard of student evaluation so that its graduates rub shoulders with the graduates of IBA and other top Business School in the private sector.
The newly formed Alumni Association of the IBA Punjab will certainly be conducive to the efforts of the managers of IBA Punjab and the Alumnus shall be pleased to do so far their Alma Mater. It is our duty to pay back to the Motherland and what best way to do that, other than educating the sons and daughters of the soil at economical price with high quality.
